VIDEO ASSISTED REFEREE(VAR), CONTRIBUTION OR CONTROVERSY?
FIFA has recently introduced the Video Assisted Refereeing (VAR) into football, and its introduction has been greeted with positive and negative views alike. This is rightly so as evidenced in the FIFA Confederation Cup where it was first used in a major tournament. Notably in the match in Group A featuring Portugal and Mexico where the Portuguese and Mexicans both felt hard done by the use of the Video replay system as the Referee had to consult it when taking a major decision. One cannot help but toe the line of thought of producing Referees that seem unable to carry out basic decisions in a game.I cannot help but picture a World Cup Final with the Referee having to go the Video replay to confirm if a last minute goal will stand or not. This will certainly kill the rush of adrenaline in fans, and we all know that this is what we love and live for in every single second of Football. Take this away and you will be left with lukewarm fans which will bore the game and can eventually lead to its death.
Looking the other way, it might help to smooth out the mistakes in games and ensure we have a free and fair game. If you cast your mind back to the 2010 World Cup Final between Spain and Netherlands where Nigel de jong of Netherlands took it upon himself to display a martial art kick to the thorax cavity of Spanish midfielder Xabi Alonso you can be almost certain that he would have been sent off or the famous hand of God of Maradona you can be certain that these injustice would certainly have not gone unpunished. There are so many cases you can picture, im sure you would be picturing your favourite team right now when they got robbed at point and you wished you could revisit it that instant on the field, well you got your wish. The Video Assisted Refereeing is here, a contribution or a controversy? You decide.
